We all want students who look at a problem like 3(y – 5) – 2(y – 5) = 0, and notice something about the numbers in the problem at which point they don’t blindly apply a common strategy (e.g., applying the distributive property). For this ‘want’ to become a reality, we must explicitly focus on strategy-use and flexibility! We will explore routines and instructional moves that can be implemented in middle and high schools to ensure that even sets of traditionally low-level, non-contextual tasks can become higher-level reasoning tasks!
